The Piazza San Marco or St. Mark's Square contains the Basilica di San Marco (reputedly containing the body of St. Mark stolen from Alexandria in 828 by Venetian merchants), the Palazzo Ducale (the seat of the Doge since 814), and the Campanile (the detached belltower of the Basilica reputedly begun in 912 and the tallest building in Venice).

It is located on the expanse of the Canale di San Marco at the terminus of the Grand Canal and the Canale della Giudecca (the two major thoroughfares of Venice) and looks across to the island and church of San Giorgio Maggiore.
