The extensive lotus and lilies gardens at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens are among the least familiar and least appreciated treasures of Washington DC. Most residents either do not know they exist or have at best a vague idea of where they may be located. They are not well publicized.
The gardens are meccas for outdoor photographers, however, when they bloom every summer with brilliant flowers in succession: first the lilies and then the lotuses. Even if you are not a photographer, the gardens are well worth visiting during June and July for a visual treat (and they are never crowded).
The gardens are among my favorite Washington DC photographic subjects, and I take particular delight in displaying them on large canvas prints in office conference rooms.
